HANNAH CHO

Grammy-nominated soprano Hannah Cho is celebrated for her luminous tone, dramatic sensitivity, and refined artistry, with a particular passion for contemporary works and art song. 

Ms. Cho earned widespread critical acclaim for her portrayal of Josephine Young in the New York premiere of Huang Ruo’s An American Soldier at the Perelman Performing Arts Center. The New York Times praised her "lucid soprano" that "soared as Josephine," while The Wall Street Journal noted that she "relished Josephine’s high-flying vocal lines and exuded warmth." 

Ms. Cho has sung leading roles in Die Zauberflöte (Pamina), La Calisto (Calisto), Madama Butterfly (CioCioSan), I Pagliacci (Nedda), Mikado (YumYum) and Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Rosina) with Mannes Opera, Pocket Opera, Opera Naples Daejeon Opera, and Livermore Valley Opera, and covered the role of Violetta La traviata with Korea National Opera. A dedicated advocate for world premieres, she has created roles such as Nightingale in A Song of Nightingale (On Site Opera), Little Madame Shoes in Red Shoes (Korea National Opera), and Nanako in Dong Ju Yun.

Recently, she appeared in collaboration with pianists Youngmo Na and Jonathan Mamora at WQXR’s Young Artists Showcase, hosted by Simone Dinnerstein, and was an active participant in the prestigious Merola Opera Program, where she was featured as Marzellina in Fidelio and Musetta in La bohème.

 

In concert, Ms. Cho has performed as a soloist in Handel’s Messiah, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Cohen’s Nizkor: A Journey of Remembrance, Andre’s Magnificat and Penderecki’s Agnus dei and Sanctus. Her performances have graced prestigious venues worldwide, including the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House, San Francisco Symphony Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Beijing Grand Theater, the Seoul Arts Center Opera House, Harbin Grand Theater, Heidelberg Theater, Concert Hall in Linz at Bruckner University, Lotte Concert Hall in Seoul, Goyang Aram Nuri Theater, Bohemia National Hall, and the German Consulate in New York. 

 Beyond the classical stage, Ms. Cho’s versatile artistry extends to major global media projects. She performed the role of Josephine Young on the recording of the opera An American Soldier, a performance that earned her widespread critical acclaim. Furthermore, she contributed her vocals to the original score for the PlayStation 5 title Death Stranding 2: On the Beach (Kojima Productions) and served as the singing voice for the lead character in the Netflix series The Hymn of Death. Her discography also includes the album Lullaby for Grown-up Child, recorded with Querencia.

Ms. Cho’s excellence has been recognized with numerous accolades, including first prize at the Beijing International Opera Competition, Korea National Opera Competition, Daejeon Opera Competition, Seil Korean Art Song Competition, and the German Lieder Association Competition. She is also a prize winner of the James Toland Vocal Arts Competition and the KBS Competition, and has received grants from the Gerda Lissner Foundation, the Goldsmith Foundation, and the Michael Sisca Opera Award.

In the 2026 season, Ms. Cho will make highly anticipated role debuts as Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly and Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, alongside her San Francisco Symphony Hall debut as the soprano soloist in Mahler’s Symphony No. 4. Her upcoming engagements also include a featured operatic performance in Los Angeles, with further details to be announced for the late 2026 season.
